Theme: "Combining Techniques and Experiments"

Comprehending programs written by others is at the heart of various software engineering activities. Program comprehension is performed when one reuses, reengineers, or enhances existing (or legacy) programs. It is also performed during review or code walk-through of new programs.

This workshop will gather together practitioners and researchers from academia, industry, and government to review the current state of the art and explore solutions to the program comprehension problem.

The focus of the workshop is to explore the opportunities of both techniques and experiments to further improve program understanding: evaluating existing techniques by experiments and exploiting experimental results to revise existing or to develop new techniques.

Papers related, but not limited, to the following topics are invited:

• Theories and models for software comprehension
• Program comprehension processes and strategies
• Cognitive processes in program comprehension
• Experiments with comprehension models
• Knowledge, program representation forms and repositories for program comprehension
• Tools facilitating software comprehension
• Comprehension during large scale maintenance and/or reengineering
• Reuse reengineering and concept assignment processes
• Reverse engineering to support comprehension including architecture recovery
• Innovative technologies for reverse engineering
• Case studies in reverse engineering, reengineering and maintenance which focus on program comprehension
• Guidelines for facilitating program comprehension (based on observation and experimentation)
• User interfaces, program visualization and animation.

Papers should be original work, limited to 10 proceedings pages, at most 6000 words. Papers must not have been previously published nor have been submitted to, or be in consideration for, any journal, book, or conference.

The workshop proceedings will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press. Authors are expected to present the accepted paper at the workshop.

We also invite proposals for working sessions (90 minutes each) on any of the topic areas mentioned above. Working sessions are designed around a specific theme and should be more interactive than a panel session.

Co-location with ICSE 2000 and its workshops provides a unique opportunity to meet new colleagues and exchange ideas.
